Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino

An Add-on Tool for Accessing Domino Server Emails and Other Items Using Microsoft Outlook

Domino and Exchange are the server components of the server-client applications, respectively from IBM and Microsoft. These server components are accessed through their respective client components only - Domino server is accessed using Lotus Notes and Exchange Server is accessed using Outlook. It is right to say that earlier there weren’t attempts either from IBM or Microsoft to enable their servers to be accessed by the client of the other, probably because of these two products being rivals in the market. However, later it changed. Now a Microsoft connector application - Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino - is available with the help of which you can access Domino Server files in Outlook. Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino helps to access items of Domino Server Releases 5.x and 6.x using Outlook versions 2002 and 2003. (It has an earlier version named Microsoft Outlook 2002 Connector that worked only with Outlook 2002.)

Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino helps to access messages, calendar items, tasks and address book of Domino Server 5 and 6 versions using Outlook 2002 or 2003. So this add-on application is extremely helpful in organization where both Exchange Server and Domino Server are in use. Also, this is helpful for employees who are more comfortable with MS Outlook than with Lotus Notes.

Working with Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino (olconn2.exe)

Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino (olconn2.exe) can be downloaded from the download center of Microsoft using Microsoft Windows Installer version 2.0 or later. The operating system requirements for download are: Windows 2000, Windows 2000 Service Pack 2/3/4, Windows XP, Windows XP Service Pack 1. Please note that Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino works only with Outlook 2002 and 2003, and IBM Lotus Domino Server Releases 5.x and 6.x.

Limitations of Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino

Though it helps to access Domino Server files using Outlook, there are many limitations for this application. They are:
  • It works only with Domino Server 5.x and 6.x releases, and Outlook 2002 and 2003
  • It does not enable Lotus Notes features that are unavailable in Outlook 2002/2003 (e.g. Accessing Notes database and application)
  • It does not allow Exchange Account and MS Outlook Connector Domino Account in the same user profile.
  • It does not provide Outlook features that are not supported by Domino (e.g. Message recall)
Capabilities and limitations of this application are clearly explained in the Readme and User Guide provided with Microsoft Office Outlook Connector for Domino.
